Manchester United Break Six-Year Trophy Drought by Winning Carabao Cup Final Against Newcastle

Manchester United clinched the Carabao Cup after a 2-0 victory against Newcastle United, ending their six-year trophy drought at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

The win marked United's first major trophy since their 2017 Europa League triumph. Against Eddie Howe's Newcastle, the Red Devils delivered a comfortable performance with goals from Casemiro and Marcus Rashford.

Although the beginning of the game saw little in terms of clear-cut chances, United took the lead on the 33rd minute with the first of two quickfire goals. Midfielder Casemiro sent half of Wembley into pandemonium with a well-executed header from a wide free kick delivered by Luke Shaw.

Six minutes later, Newcastle's defender Botman accidentally guided Rashford's shot into his own goal, doubling United's lead. This marked Rashford's first goal in a final after having played in seven previous ones.

Wout Weghorst threatened again in first-half stoppage time with a well-struck effort from distance, but Newcastle's goalkeeper Loris Karius was equal to it. Newcastle came out stronger in the second half, but failed to convert their opportunities into goals. Joelinton came the closest but had his shot well-blocked by Lisandro Martinez.

After the match, United's Bruno Fernandes expressed his satisfaction with the win but emphasized the need to continue to strive for more success. United's fans were in full voice as Fernandes raised the trophy, which they hope will be the first of many under Erik ten Hag.

The Dutch manager is the first at Old Trafford to win silverware since Jose Mourinho. United currently sit third in the Premier League table and remain in the Europa League draw. As for Newcastle, they have now lost each of their past nine matches at Wembley, a run that began in the 1974 FA Cup final.
